Industrial Automation Application

Industrial Automation

Control panels and automation cabinets run 24/7 in plants where washdown, process steam and seasonal humidity attack sealed enclosures. Condensation on PLC cards, drives and terminal blocks causes intermittent faults, false alarms and unplanned line stops that ripple through the whole production schedule.

NOXT semiconductor dehumidifiers protect control cabinets, PLC panels and drive enclosures without compressor, refrigerant or desiccant maintenance. Compact DIN-rail and panel-mounted models fit existing cabinets, support RS485 remote monitoring, and hold RH stable through day-night thermal cycling and washdown environments.

  • DC12V / DC24V / AC220V options
  • RS485 Modbus RTU ready
  • Semiconductor — no refrigerant
  • Continuous duty in -20°C to +60°C
  • DIN rail / panel mounting
  • OEM from 100 pcs

Why automation cabinets are especially vulnerable

An industrial control panel experiences a humidity cycle every shift. Heaters and drives raise internal temperature during production; overnight or weekend shutdown lets it fall, collapsing internal pressure and pulling humid plant air through gasket gaps and cable glands. In washdown zones, the moisture load is constant and aggressive.

Intermittent faults on PLC and I/O cards

Moisture films on PLC cards, I/O terminals and connector pins increase contact resistance and cause intermittent faults that are almost impossible to reproduce during diagnosis. A single ghost fault can cost hours of production troubleshooting.

Corrosion on terminals and bus bars

Process steam, washdown water and humidity accelerate corrosion on DIN-rail terminals, breaker lugs and grounding paths. Oxidation discovered during preventive maintenance means performance has already drifted.

False alarms and unplanned line stops

A humidity-triggered false alarm on a safety or interlock circuit can stop an entire line. Each event carries restart cost, quality risk and lost production — all avoidable with active humidity control.

Operational cost

The real cost of humidity on a production line

The cost is not the desiccant pack in the panel. It is the combination of lost production + premature component replacement + repeated service visits + quality risk.

USD 5,000–50,000

line stop cost per unplanned event

downtime + restart + quality scrap

USD 800–4,000

PLC / drive board replacement per fault

board class and OEM dependent

1–3 years

typical humidity failure window

vs 10+ year panel design life

USD 200–1,000

service intervention cost per visit

travel, labor and spare parts excluded

Single production line

On one packaging line with 12 control panels, preventing one humidity-related stop per month can save USD 30,000–120,000 annually in lost production and service calls — before counting quality claims.

Multi-panel plant rollout

On a plant with 200 panels, a 1% monthly humidity-related fault rate over 5 years represents USD 200K–800K in avoidable downtime and replacements.

State of the art

Why common panel humidity approaches fall short

Desiccant packs in panels

  • Saturate quickly in sealed panels; replacement schedules are easily skipped

NOXT semiconductor dehumidifiers run continuously with stable extraction — no scheduled desiccant replacement.

Panel heaters only

  • Heaters raise temperature but do not remove moisture; dew point still reached at shutdown

Heating and dehumidification are complementary — heat for minimum temperature, NOXT for humidity.

Vents and breathers

  • Vents admit humid plant air; condensation returns when the line stops

Venting and active dehumidification are complementary — vent for pressure, NOXT for humidity.

Format selection

Which NOXT dehumidifier for your control cabinet type

Match wattage and mounting format to panel volume, power supply and whether the cabinet is indoors, in a washdown zone or outdoors.

Cabinet Type Panel Volume Environment Recommended Solution
Small PLC / I/O panel
60–120 L
Indoor, dry
CZCS860 / 40W compact
Drive / MCC cabinet
120–300 L
Washdown zone
CZCS-120W stainless

Integration

01

Small PLC / I/O panel

Mount the dehumidifier on the DIN rail or door inner panel near the PLC compartment. Keep clear airflow around the cold sink. Connect DC12V or DC24V from the panel control bus. Typical installation time: under 30 minutes.

02

Drive / MCC cabinet

For 120–300 L cabinets, position the unit away from direct drive heat discharge but within the main air volume. Route condensate drain downward. Enable RS485 if the panel reports to the SCADA.

03

Large control room cabinet row

Long cabinet rows may need multiple units for airflow coverage rather than one oversized device in a corner. Share panel volume, heat sources and door opening frequency when requesting engineering confirmation.

Lab test & field validation

Condensation control under production thermal cycling

35°C production → 5°C overnight ramp over 60 minutes. Three identical IP54 panel mock-ups:

Configuration Result
Bare panel (control) Visible condensation on inner surfaces
Panel + heater only Condensation returns at shutdown
Panel + NOXT dehumidifier Stable RH below 60%, no visible condensation
